On May 10th 1908, the first Mother's Day observation was held in Grafton, West Virginia. This day commemorated
the death of Anna Jarvis's mother. In general Anna Jarvis has been credited for generating the idea of Mother's Day in North America. Anna Jarvis played a major role in trying to get the government to establish a national holiday to
honor mothers. On May 9th 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May Mother's Day.
